Professional Experience

 

Management Consultant, PA&A, Toronto, Canada, 2004-present

Business and technology consulting services to evaluate, design and plan implementations of key technologies aligned to long-term business and corporate strategy.  Key clients included: CUETS, Canadian Tire, Ontario Ministry of Justice, and CGI.

 

Strategic Highlights:

·         Magenn Power Inc.: Facilitated the Technical Councils deliberation on alternate LTA power generation option and developed management report and recommendation covering organizational issues, management recommendations and technology option.

·         CUETS (Credit Union Electronic Transaction Systems): Facilitated series of strategy sessions with executive team and 40+ directors to develop strategic plan and business case to introduce chip card technology serving 600 credit union clients and 800,000 MasterCards.  Wrote board presentation to secure $5M investment, and acted as strategic counsel to core project team.  Led strategy and planning for two-day industry summit to introduce CUETS chip card plan to 100 credit union CEOs and served as event keynote speaker. 

·         Canadian Tire Financial Services:  Conducted analysis of existing state of $2B operation representing five diverse companies (DIY, petrol, clothing, parts, and financial services) with more than 500 retail operations and 2 million MasterCards. Developed strategy and decision plan to convert card issuing and retail environment to support new Smart Card technology.  Interfaced and educated senior management team and more than 50 internal stakeholders on strategy and implementation plan.

·      CGI:  Served as subject matter expert on the development of CGI’s Request to Quality as the systems integrator for the Greater Toronto Area’s contactless fare collection system.  Developed the partnering strategy and wrote business case, executive summary and key sections of the response.  As a result, CGI was short-listed to provide, install, and operate the technology solution representing $250M in technology and services over five years. 

 

Vice President, Emerging Products and Technologies

Visa Canada Association, Toronto, Canada, 2002-2003

Member of the executive committee mandated to reinvigorate the adoption of new products and technologies by internal staff and 23 member banks.

 

Strategic Highlights:

·         Led the Visa Canada board to approve the roadmap for long-term solution to combat credit card fraud, which introduced chip card and PIN and demonstrated a 50% reduction in overall fraud.

·         Influenced MasterCard and Interac to embrace the same solution to industry-wide issue; net result was a $2B investment in cards, terminals and systems upgrades, affecting more than 2,000 financial institutions and merchants.

·         Introduced a series of strategies to position Visa in the pre-paid card, co-branded transit card and debit market.

·         Represented Visa Canada’s interests within the Global Product Development Council of Visa International; educated and routinely influenced Canadian banks to accede to larger international issues.

 

Management Consultant and Interim Executive

PA&A, Brussels, Belgium and St Paul, Minnesota, 1996-2002

Business and technology consulting services to evaluate, design, and create growth opportunities for emerging and established technology products and services.  Clients included early stage companies and global players, including AT&T, Oracle, IBM, British Telecom, Philips Semiconductor, and Verifone.

 

Strategic Highlights:

·         AT&T: Three-year engagement serving as technology advisor and team mentor to the Calling Card, Multi-media (Internet Services) and Universal Card Services business units as AT&T worked to determine its various value propositions and market viability in key spaces.  Successfully led technology initiatives throughout Europe involving deep-dive analysis into products and markets, consumer behaviors, and market trends. 

·         GlobeID:  Recruited by key investor to analyze decline in sales and evaluate business viability for Internet payment security software with focus on sales in Europe and U.S. Analysis of markets and industry trends demonstrated sales cycle exceeded 18 months and long-term viability was questionable, which enabled investor to cease additional investment and resulted in saving investors $1.5M per month.

·         Oracle EMEA: Served as Interim Director, Financial Consulting supporting 255 Business Consultants across Europe.  Initiated the development of a Center of Excellence, providing key resources and skills to serve country teams.  Oracle shifted focus to the sale of applications, requiring partnerships with the Big 8 consulting firms, and ultimately eliminated its business consulting practices.

·         Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota:  Recruited to lead complex data conversion project after project was identified as in jeopardy.  Realigned technology and business requirements and served as project manager for the development of an Oracle 8I database, import utilities, and real-time interfaces to the legacy mainframe environment.  Successfully converted claims, benefits, and provider data to a new 8I environment.

·         Unicate BV:  Commissioned by start-up to develop go-to-market strategy for new technology capable of proving irrefutable proof of identity at much lower costs than integrated circuits and Public Key infrastructure.  Initiated strategic meetings with 12 key global banks to present the solution.  Technology was viewed by financial marketplace as too disruptive, which led to company disbanding and assets being sold.

 

Director IT Strategy

Europay International (MasterCard Europe), Brussels, Belgium 1991-1996

Joined firm as Interim General Manager of European Payment Systems (EPSS), and served as member of executive team responsible for merging EPSS, EuroCard, and Eurocheque.  After reorganization, promoted to IT strategy role to evaluate emerging technology opportunities.

·         Planned and secured board approval to expand operations, with focus on modernizing applications and operations framework to state-of-the-art platform, driving new technology developments and achieving higher quality standards.  Recognized for efficiently growing the IT division and improving operational performance of all delivery systems to support 30% annual rate of growth.

·         Key leader of the consortium that developed EMV, the international standard for Smart Card payments.

Project Manager-Consultant

Smith New Court, London, UK, 1990-1991

Served as consultant responsible for evaluating technology RFPs for Smith New Court (major UK stockbroker) and its new London trading room.  Asked by executive team to take over as project manager with the mandate to get key technology projects back on track, reinvigorate the team, renegotiate the contracts and work with the general contractor to assure the integration of all voice, data and market data services for new facility.

 

Vice President and Director, European Telecommunications

Shearson Lehman Hutton Ltd., London, UK, 1987-1990

Recruited by prior client to take over department with strategic directive to rebuild confidence within the organization for the telecommunications department.  Achieved boost in departmental confidence while reducing headcount by 30%, and capital equipment and annual expenses by 25%.  Able to successfully integrate EF Hutton trading staff (aquired in 1988) into operation while continuing to streamline costs and staff.

Served as Project Manager of a $170 million project to develop Salomon’s UK Headquarters.  Completed on budget and on time to assure Salomon’s success as a market maker when London dematerialized and deregulated the stock market.  Managed a team of 23 people supporting European telecommunications.
